Appian Education LLC ("Appian," "we," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Appian platform, how we use and protect that information, and your choices regarding your data. By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this Policy.
01 Information We Collect
Account Information
When you register, we collect:
- Name and email address
- Date of birth or age confirmation (to verify eligibility)
- Payment information (processed by our third-party payment provider; Appian does not store full payment card details)
Student Profile and Content
To provide personalized recommendations, you may choose to share:
- Academic information (GPA, coursework, test scores)
- Extracurricular activities and personal interests
- College preferences and application timelines
- Essays, activity descriptions, and other written materials you submit for feedback
- Responses provided to Livia and other interview or intake tools
Usage Data
We automatically collect certain technical information, including:
- Log data (IP address, browser type, pages visited, time and date of access)
- Device information
- Feature usage patterns within the Service
02 How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, operate, and personalize the Service and its AI tools
- Generate the Portrait, Horizon, and other synthesized outputs that are central to the Appian experience
- Process payments and manage your subscription
- Send transactional communications (account confirmations, billing notices, service updates)
- Improve and refine our AI tools and overall Service quality
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service
03 AI Processing and Third-Party Services
The core AI capabilities of Appian are powered by third-party AI providers, including Anthropic, PBC. Content you submit for AI processing — including essays, activity descriptions, and interview responses — is transmitted to these providers solely for the purpose of generating the Service's outputs. We select providers whose data use terms are consistent with your privacy.
Other third-party services we use include:
- Vercel — hosting and infrastructure
- Stripe — payment processing
- Supabase — data storage
Each of these providers operates under its own privacy policy and data processing terms. We do not permit these providers to use your data for their own marketing or advertising purposes.
04 Children's Privacy (COPPA)
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Account registration requires affirmative confirmation of age eligibility. If we become aware that a user is under 13, we will delete the account and associated data promptly.
For users between 13 and 17, we encourage parental awareness and involvement. Parents or guardians who have questions about a minor's use of the Service may contact us at hello@appian.education.
05 Data Retention
We retain your account information and content for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. If you cancel your account and request deletion, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or legitimate business purposes (such as records of completed financial transactions).
06 Your Rights and Choices
You have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your account and personal data
- Withdraw consent to data processing where consent is the legal basis

07 Data Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and you use the Service at your own risk.
08 Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. When we do, we will revise the "Last Updated" date and notify you of material changes via email or a notice within the Service. Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
09 Governing Law
This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising from this Policy or your use of the Service shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Fairfax County, Virginia.
